Its geographic characteristics, topography, climate, as well as a walking culture of its citizens, make it pedestrian-friendly. According to both worldwide and domestic research, there is an increasing pedestrian involvement in traffic accidents, whereby the costs for the society are high. In the world, as well as in the Republic of Serbia, it has been recognized that the use of devices that perform distraction to pedestrians when crossing the street. The method of scientific observation for the collection of data was applied and based on which the pedestrian behavior was studied. The key results of this paper highlighted the high use of mobile phones for talking or writing messages and the high use of headphones when crossing the street. One of the key results of this research is the identification of influencing factors in the way of crossing the street, and the possibility of using a set of measures on the observed negative behavior of pedestrian. Based on the research it was concluded that pedestrians under the age of 25 reported the unsafe behaviour when crossing a street. Benchmarking and the comparison of cities with similar walking characteristics were proposed as method to be applied in future research in order to improve pedestrian safety state. ER -
